Violist Thomas Beckman and percussionist JK Plett came to Upperland Studio in Richmond, BC for a Star Wars–themed performance session. Their instruments and live performance were the focus, with the LED wall providing science-fiction worlds around them. Both artists’ official Instagram accounts are listed in the credits below.
Music in a science-fiction setting
The session used neon city imagery and deep-space vistas as backgrounds. The curved LED volume allowed the team to change the visual environment while keeping the musicians in the same performance space. Light from the screen contributed colour and reflections around the viola, percussion instruments and performers.
The original project record describes neon rain, distant nebulae and a starship bridge among the looks captured. The photographs below document the musicians and the stage. The creative purpose of the environment was to support the music and the feeling of a science-fiction performance, rather than replace the artists with a technology demonstration.
Artists, community and future performances
Our public behind-the-scenes post credits Thomas Beckman for viola and JK Plett for percussion. It also records our effort to connect the artists with community performance opportunities and music education partners. Those relationships are part of what makes a production space useful to the people working in it. Follow the artists directly for their own recordings, performances and upcoming work.
